Arriving this week are two Japanese selvedge denims with very different characters.

Spring Garden Selvedge starts with a deep indigo exterior and hides a multicolored weft inspired by Monet’s garden at Giverny. Laid-Back Black takes a more straightforward approach: a rinsed black Japanese selvedge denim with texture, comfort, and an easy everyday feel.

One reveals its color at the cuff. The other keeps the focus on black denim, soft texture, and wearability. Both release in True Guy and Strong Guy.

Spring Garden Selvedge

Spring Garden Selvedge began with a customer suggestion: what if we made a denim inspired by a famous painting?

Rather than reproducing the painting itself, we translated the color palette into the fabric. Inspired by Claude Monet’s garden at Giverny, this 12.5oz Japanese selvedge denim uses a deep rope-dyed indigo warp on the outside, with a multicolored weft hidden on the inside.

At first glance, it reads as a clean dark indigo jean. The color appears when the cuff is turned up: soft yellows, greens, blues, and violets drawn from the palette of Monet’s garden. It is subtle, but it changes the whole character of the denim once you notice it.

The weft is made using section-dyed yarns, where multiple colors are dyed along the same strand. Three of these gradient-dyed yarns are then twisted together into a single weft yarn before weaving. This creates a shifting mix of color across the interior of the fabric, with tones appearing and disappearing throughout the yarn.

The denim is made from 77% cotton and 23% polyester, giving it a softer hand and easier drape than a typical rigid selvedge denim. It requires very little break-in while still keeping the texture and structure of Japanese selvedge.

For this release, we updated the finishing details. Spring Garden Selvedge now comes with golden contrast stitching, tin-on-copper hardware, a classic white-red-white selvedge edge, Union Special chain-stitched hems, and a Horween Blue Cavalier Ink Chromexcel leather patch. The patch has a waxy finish and will develop its own patina with wear.

Spring Garden Selvedge was released once before, but this version comes with new trims and, for the first time, will be available in Strong Guy.

Laid-Back Black

Laid-Back Black is built around a simple idea: a black selvedge denim that feels easy from the first wear.

The fabric is a 13.5oz Japanese black selvedge denim that has been rinsed in Japan. The rinse softens the denim and removes much of the initial stiffness, giving it a more broken-in feel without changing the clean look of the fabric.

The denim has a slightly hairy surface and a short slub character, adding texture without making the jeans look busy.

Finished with a black leather patch, black hardware, black pocket bags, tone-on-tone stitching, and a classic white-red-white selvedge edge.
