Galaxy Selvedge: A Multicolored Universe

Galaxy Selvedge earns its name up close. Across its dark indigo face, red, yellow, and blue neps interrupt the surface in small flecks and short streaks. The effect is irregular by design: no two areas of the fabric distribute the colour in quite the same way.

It has also become one of the pairs Brandon keeps reaching for this season. The reason is not difficult to find. Galaxy Selvedge combines the visual density of a dark indigo denim with a texture that rewards a closer look.

Woven in Japan at 13oz, it begins with a crisp raw feel. Its 65% cotton / 35% rayon construction gives the denim a softer hand and more fluid drape than an all-cotton fabric at a similar weight. That balance makes the fabric feel substantial without becoming stiff or overly rigid.

Colour From the Inside Out

The colour in Galaxy Selvedge is woven into the fabric, not printed on its surface. Its indigo rope-dyed warp forms the face of the denim, while a black, nep-heavy weft runs beneath it.

Nep is the name for the small knots and clusters of fibre spun into a yarn. In a smooth, uniform textile, those irregularities are usually removed. Here, they are the point. Red, yellow, and blue fibres are incorporated into the black weft yarn, then carried through the weave as the denim is made.

As that weft crosses the indigo warp, the coloured neps show through in scattered points. Some read as tiny dots; others stretch into short marks that follow the direction of the yarn. The black weft keeps the base dark, which makes the colour feel integrated into the denim rather than laid over it.

A Better Look at the Cuff

Turn up the cuff and the construction becomes even easier to see. More of the black weft is visible on the reverse side of the fabric, creating a dark ground behind the red, yellow, and blue nep. A clean white selvedge edge finishes the cuff with a sharp contrast.

It is a fabric with two distinct views: a deep indigo face broken by colour, and a darker reverse where the same coloured fibres stand out more clearly.

Wear & Fade

As the indigo warp wears, Galaxy Selvedge will develop in its own way. The black weft and multicoloured nep remain part of the fabric’s structure, so the character of the denim is not limited to the surface alone.

The collection is finished with black hardware and a Horween® Blue Cavalier Ink Chromexcel leather patch. Chromexcel is a pull-up leather with a lightly waxed finish and natural tonal variation; creasing and handling can bring out lighter highlights over time.
