Some denim fabrics are defined by heavy yarns or irregular textures. Others are defined by precision. The Streamline Selvedge is a 9.25oz Japanese selvedge denim developed with a dense, tightly woven structure that produces a smooth and uniform surface. Indigo rope-dyed cotton yarns form a classic indigo exterior while the lighter fabric weight allows the denim to be worn comfortably across a wide range of conditions. Woven in Japan and cut and sewn in Canada, the Streamline Selvedge focuses on controlled construction and a clean, uniform fabric surface.

Lightweight Denim and the Streamline Era

Lightweight denim fabrics became more common as denim manufacturing expanded beyond heavy workwear during the mid-20th century. Fabrics below traditional workwear weights allowed denim garments to be worn in warmer climates and for longer daily use. At the same time, improvements in weaving technology made it possible to maintain durability through tighter fabric density rather than relying solely on heavier yarns.

The name Streamline references the streamlined design movement that shaped industrial design from the 1930s through the 1950s. A streamliner refers to a vehicle designed with a shape intended to reduce air resistance. The term was commonly applied to high-speed railway trainsets during this period, particularly streamlined passenger locomotives with smooth, enclosed bodies and continuous surfaces that visually emphasized speed and efficiency. These forms became defining examples of the broader Streamline Moderne design movement, which influenced automobiles, trucks, and industrial products throughout the same era.

The concept of streamlined rail travel continued into later high-speed train development. In Japan, the Shinkansen system introduced in 1964 further refined aerodynamic rail design, applying similar principles of smooth surfaces and controlled forms to trains operating at significantly higher speeds.

Fabric and Construction

The Streamline Selvedge is a 9.25oz Japanese selvedge denim woven from 100% cotton yarns.

The warp yarns are dyed with indigo prior to weaving while the weft yarns remain undyed. The fabric uses a tightly packed weave structure that increases fabric density relative to its weight.

This dense construction produces a smooth and even surface across the fabric face. Compared to heavily slubbed denim fabrics, the Streamline Selvedge prioritizes uniform yarn distribution and controlled weave tension.

Details and Finishing

The fabric is woven on shuttle looms in Japan, producing a white / red / white selvedge edge visible along the outseam.

Each pair features a waxed pull-up leather patch referred to as Raging Kong leather. Pull-up leather contains oils and waxes that shift within the hide when flexed, producing visible tonal variation over time.

The jeans use tin hardware and a button fly construction. Contrasting stitching follows traditional five-pocket denim assembly methods. All garments are cut and sewn in Canada.
