College names, team logos, faded lettering. The heather grey sweatshirt has carried them all, but the colour underneath has an identity of its own. You recognise that mix of light and dark whether it’s on a vintage college crewneck or a plain sweatshirt with nothing printed across the chest.
Heather Grey Selvedge makes that familiar backdrop the main attraction. Woven into 13.5oz Japanese selvedge denim, it brings a classic athletic colour into a completely different fabric.
Before There’s a Yarn
Heather, or mélange, is a color effect achieved by cross dyeing fabric made from more than one type of fiber. The process involving dipping the fabric into several different dye baths specifically chosen for their affinity to the fibers so that each fiber type will only absorb certain dyes. This produces a fabric that has subtle variations in color, an effect known as heather.
Japanese mills refer to these as top-dyed yarns. The cotton fibres are coloured before spinning, then light and dark grey tones are blended together and spun into yarn.
Those individual tones remain visible within the finished yarn. Once woven, they create small variations throughout the cloth, giving the grey its heathered appearance.
The order matters. Dyeing a finished yarn to a uniform shade starts with a different goal: an even colour along its length. Here, the mixture of shades is already part of the yarn’s construction. The resulting grey has a softly mottled appearance, with detail that becomes clearer up close.
Mixed Shades, Pure Cotton
The blend refers to the colours being combined. The fabric itself is 100% cotton.
That distinction is useful when looking at the finished jeans. Their appearance recalls a grey sweatshirt, while the cloth has the firm hand and structure of rigid denim. The heathered colour is there from the beginning; the softness develops through wear.
Breaking It In
At first, the denim feels crisp and rigid. As you wear it, the cloth gradually softens and begins to mould to your body, becoming more comfortable while retaining its structure.
A waxed leather patch finishes each pair. The denim is woven in Japan, and the jeans are cut and sewn in Canada.
